Northwestern experts on SCOTUS upholding Obamacare’s preventive care provision

‘Ensuring continued no-cost access to services where early treatment makes a difference is a public right,” expert says

EVANSTON, Ill. --- The U.S. Supreme Court preserved a key part of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) today, upholding coverage of preventive care.

In a 6-3 ruling, the Court decided insurance companies would be required under the ACA to cover any preventive services recommended by the US Preventive Services Task Force, affecting Americans access to preventive care like PrEP and cancer screenings.

Quote from Dr. Ackermann:

“The Supreme Court’s recent decision to uphold the preventive care requirement is a major victory for public health. Preventive care decisions are made between individuals and their healthcare providers. When such a decision is made, the ACA provision ensures that some patients won’t face barriers to receiving them because health insurance requires them to pay for them. Ensuring continued no-cost access to services like mammograms or screening children for vision problems where early treatment makes a difference is a public right and an important health policy to preserve.
