Former Afghan prosecutor Najia Mahmodi to speak at Northwestern May 31

EVANSTON, Ill. — Najia Mahmodi, a former Afghan prosecutor known for her work combating violence against women, will speak at Northwestern University on Tuesday, May 31, at 12:30 p.m. Central Time.

The fireside chat is sponsored by the Northwestern Buffett Institute for Global Affairs and Northwestern Pritzker School of Law. The event will take place at Northwestern Buffett located at 1800 Sherman Avenue, Suite 3000, Evanston, Ill.

The event is open to the public. Registration is required. Both in-person and virtual options are available.

News reports have documented the challenges facing Afghanistan’s female lawyers and judges, including harassment and targeted killings by criminals—including members of the Taliban— whom Afghan prosecutors helped convict in the past.

Mahmodi is currently a visiting scholar at Northwestern Buffett. She is also a clinical fellow at Northwestern Pritzker.
