Webinar: The great unraveling? Media, geopolitics and the COVID-19 pandemic

In a webinar at noon CST on Tuesday, June 16, global media expert and incoming Northwestern University-Qatar (NU-Q) dean, Marwan M. Kraidy, will give a “tour d’horizon” of the repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic on media and geopolitics. The webinar will focus on rival media narratives and the perceptible shift in how politicians worldwide speak about security, borders and identity that has emerged since the outbreak of COVID-19.

Kraidy is professor of communication, the Anthony Shadid Chair in Global Media, Politics and Culture, and the founding director of the Center for Advanced Research in Global Communication (CARGC) at the University of Pennsylvania’s Annenberg School for Communication. A scholar of global communication and an authority on Arab media, politics and culture, he studies the relationship between culture and geopolitics, and global media systems and industries. Kraidy is also an Andrew Carnegie Fellow and author of award-winning books including, “Reality Television and Arab Politics: Contention in Public Life” and “The naked blogger of Cairo: creative insurgency in the Arab world.” In 2017, Kraidy became the only scholar to have twice won the Best Book Award from the International Communication Association’s Division of Global Communication and Social Change. Fluent in Arabic and French, Kraidy is a regular media contributor worldwide and tweets @MKraidy.
