Renowned clarinetist David Shifrin presents a recital at the Bienen School March 10
Northwestern University’s Henry and Leigh Bienen School of Music welcomes clarinetist David Shifrin, one of only two wind players to receive Lincoln Center’s coveted Avery Fisher Prize, a $100,000 award presented to solo instrumentalists for outstanding achievement and excellence in music.
Shifrin’s program will explore prominent clarinet repertoire including Carl Nielsen’s “Humorous Bagatelles” -- arranged by Bienen School faculty member Steven Cohen -- Johannes Brahms’ Clarinet Sonata No. 1 in F Minor, Francis Poulenc’s Clarinet Sonata, Claude Debussy’s “Première rhapsodie” and Gioachino Rossini’s “Introduction, Theme and Variations.”
His recital will take place at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 10, in the Mary B. Galvin Recital Hall, located in the Ryan Center for the Musical Arts at 70 Arts Circle Drive on the Evanston campus.
In addition to performing with major orchestras in the U.S., Europe and Asia, Shifrin has served as principal clarinetist with the Cleveland Orchestra, the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, the New York Chamber Symphony and the American, Honolulu and Dallas Symphony Orchestras.
Shifrin’s recital and chamber music career includes performances at Washington’s Library of Congress, New York’s Alice Tully Hall, 92nd Street Y and Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall. His artistic collaborations include projects with the Guarneri, Tokyo and Emerson String Quartets, trumpeter Wynton Marsalis and pianists Emanuel Ax and André Watts. Shifrin is a three-time Grammy Award nominee, and his recording of Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto was named Stereo Review’s Record of the Year.
Shifrin served as artistic director of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center from 1992 to 2004, artistic director of the Chamber Music Society of Yale since 2008 and has been a faculty member at numerous U.S. universities including the Juilliard School, University of Southern California, University of Michigan, Cleveland Institute of Music and the University of Hawaii.
Tickets to Shifrin’s March 10 concert are $25 for the general public and $5 for full-time students with a valid ID.
