Dexter Filkins to headline launch event for new international center at Northwestern

Dexter Filkins, foreign affairs writer with The New Yorker, will have a conversation with Medill School professor and New Yorker contributor Peter Slevin, headlining an event to launch the new Weinberg College Center for International and Area Studies at Northwestern University.

The event will take place Wednesday, Oct. 23 at 6 p.m. in the Great Room, 600 Haven Street, Evanston. It is free and open to the public.

The new center supports interdisciplinary teaching and research on international and regional studies in Weinberg College of Arts & Sciences. The center further strengthens Northwestern’s teaching and scholarship on global issues.

It also will be the new administrative home for undergraduate programs in Latin American and Caribbean Studies, International Studies and Middle East and North African Studies.

“The research groups  in the center will reflect the globe-spanning scholarship of Weinberg faculty, and will include units on important contemporary topics ranging from global capitalism and law to forced migration, to politics and religion, and beyond,” said Ian Hurd, professor of political science and director of the center.
