  • Updated: October 9, 2019

The U.S. Census Bureau today released Income and Poverty in the United States: 2018 and Health Insurance Coverage in the United States: 2018.

Northwestern University professors Christine Percheski and Diane Schanzenbach are available to comment on the 2018 Census figures. Both are faculty fellows with the University's Institute for Policy Research (IPR).

Percheski, an associate professor of sociology in the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences at Northwestern, focuses on family demography, economic inequality and health policy. She also is a faculty fellow with IPR.

Schanzenbach is the Margaret Walker Alexander Professor of Human Development and Social Policy at Northwestern in the School of Education and Social Policy and director of IPR. A labor economist, she studies policies aimed at improving the lives of children in poverty, including education, health and income support policies.

Quote from Professor Schanzenbach

"Growing up in poverty has life-long impacts on kids. Today's numbers show progress, but one in six kids still lived in poverty in 2018."
