Attend a spooky film screening, learn about the history of Black Evanston and see a dance-theater triptych to kick off October. Here’s what to add to your calendar this week. As always, all are welcome!
Film resurrected
See the late writer-director Kip Hanks’ “Cold Hands,” an uncanny tale of resurrection lost for decades and revived by a strange twist of fate. Hanks passed away in 2008 with his most significant work unseen and unseeable. However, in 2025, Block Cinema ordered a pair of purportedly blank U-matic tapes only to find they contained the film’s master copy. Curator Michael Metzger will introduce the film, and a discussion with Northwestern’s Spencer Parsons will follow.
The screening is at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 1, at The Block Museum of Art, 40 Arts Circle Drive, Evanston. Register here.
New-to-you wheels
Norris Outdoors and the Recyclary Collective host a used bike sale. Each bike has been carefully inspected and is ready to ride.
The sale runs from 1–4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 2, on the plaza outside The Block Museum, 1999 Campus Drive, Evanston. More info.
Dancing in their footsteps
Created and Choreographed by Silvita Diaz Brown, “Ellas y Yo: Mexicanas” is a full-length dance-theater triptych that physically embodies the legacies of Mexican women artists who forged creative freedom while navigating colonial, religious and patriarchal constraints across centuries.
Performances are at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 2, and Saturday, Oct. 3, as well as 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 4, at Wirtz Center for the Performing Arts, Abbott Hall, 710 N. Lake Shore Drive, Chicago. Buy tickets.

Learn about the project, view clips from collected oral histories and preview the interactive map.
