Mung Chiang has officially started his Northwestern tenure as the University’s 18th president.
The area’s first heat wave did not slow down President Chiang, who devoted much of his first day on July 1 to exploring campus and meeting with students, faculty and staff. He stopped by the men’s and women’s basketball practices, took a jogging tour through the Evanston campus, enjoyed lunch with Facilities staff and sat in on a class at the Kellogg School of Management.
Later that evening, he helped serve ice cream to local residents at the World Cup watch party hosted by Northwestern and the City of Evanston at the Robert Crown Community Center.
On Thursday — his second day — President Chiang spent much of the day visiting on the Chicago campus, including stops at the Feinberg School of Medicine and Pritzker School of Law.

President Chiang stops by the men’s basketball practice, sharing his passion for sports. “I’m immensely proud to be a part of the Wildcat family,” he said.
President Chiang visits with the women’s basketball team, commending them for their dedication to academics and athletics.

At one of his final stops of the afternoon, President Chiang sits in on a corporate finance course taught by Professor Aharon Ofer of the Kellogg School of Management.
Before the U.S. World Cup match, President Chiang visits with Evanston Mayor Daniel Biss. Then, Chiang tells the crowd, “There is no gown without the town.”
President Chiang attends the outdoor World Cup watch party for the U.S. vs. Bosnia and Herzegovina match. Hosted by Northwestern and the City of Evanston, the party included picnic fare, soccer and plenty of ice cream served up by the president himself.
