‘Vigil’ by acclaimed author George Saunders kicks off the new Campus Reading Program

Northwestern recently celebrated the service of employees who have worked at the University for a quarter to nearly half a century.
The annual Staff Length of Service Recognition Reception was a chance to highlight longtime employees’ dedication to Northwestern’s mission, said Interim President and President Emeritus Henry S. Bienen.
“I am struck by just how many members of our staff reach these milestones each year,” he said. “Your work anniversaries reflect your commitment to our institution and represent an institutional knowledge base that cannot be replicated. We are proud of your service and recognize that the University is what it is because of your service.”
During the ceremony, employees were invited to reflect on what life was like at Northwestern when they first arrived at the University. Some referenced Princess Diana’s visit, multiple championships by golfer Luke Donald, the popularity of Doc Martens and renting videos to watch at home.
Upon reaching 25 years of service, employees are honored publicly every five years thereafter at the annual reception, which is part of a larger recognition program administered by the Office of Human Resources.
In all, more than 90 employees were honored this year.
