The translator’s dilemma
Translator Mariana Dimópulos delivers a talk on her book “Speaking in Tongues: Translation at the Crossroads of Languages, Domination, and Values,” in which, in dialogue with Nobel laureate novelist J.M. Coetzee, she investigates the nature of language and the challenges of translation.

Hear a classic opera
The Bienen School of Music presents “Carmen,” Georges Bizet’s opera that sees love, jealousy and tragedy collide as Don José competes with toreador Escamillo for the attention of fiery, free-spirited Carmen.

Is international travel in your future? The Morton Grove Public Library hosts a passport fair at the Global Learning Office for those applying for a first-time passport or who meet the criteria to apply for a passport in person. See the Department of State website for documentation and fee requirements.
The fair runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, March 3, and Wednesday, March 4, in suite 4-400, 1800 Sherman Ave., Evanston.
A deeper look
Galter Special Collections opens its reading room for a special open house where patrons can see historical materials that deepen the themes presented in the exhibits “Care & Custody: Past Responses to Mental Health” and “Three Steps Forward, Two Steps Back: The Continued Struggle to Treat Mental Illness in America.” Library staff will be on hand to present and discuss the materials, as well as demonstrate how to handle these historical items.
The open house runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, March 3, in Galter Health Sciences Library, Ward Building, 303 E. Chicago Ave., Chicago.
