This week, learn the intricate art of pysanky, hear about youth working to make a more peaceful world and more. Above, student Vani Bansal shows off an in-progress pysanky at a previous workshop.

On the calendar this week are opportunities to create intricate art, learn how to fact-check your sources and find your perfect study abroad program. As always, all are welcome!

The story behind the art

Visual artist Chitra Ganesh, the creator of The Block Museum of Art’s 2024–25 student acquisition, takes part in a conversation with Northwestern’s Lakshmi Padmanabhan. The two will discuss imagining against caste and patriarchy, exploring the connections between Ganesh’s practice, Indian pulp fiction and popular cinema, in a conversation moderated by Northwestern’s Laura Brueck.

The talk is at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 5, at The Block Museum of Art, 40 Arts Circle Drive, Evanston. RSVP here.

All aboard

The University of Chicago’s Richard Hornbeck delivers the 2025 Moses Lecture in Transportation. Using the expansion of railroads in the 1800s, his talk will illustrate that ignoring broader economic distortions led to an understatement of the railroads’ contribution to economic growth. And, by reworking their models, economists can better estimate the benefits of future transportation investments.

The talk is at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 5, in Lutkin Hall, 700 University Place, Evanston. Register here.

Charting a more peaceful future

Attend a student-led symposium exploring young people’s role in peacebuilding, hosted by the Buffett Institute for Global Affairs. The daylong program will feature panel discussions, community-building spaces and a special conversation with Nobel Peace Laureate Nadia Murad.

The symposium begins at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 7, at 720 University Place, Evanston. Register and see the full schedule here.

Learn an ancient art

Hear the history of pysanky — intricately decorated eggs made in Ukrainian and other Slavic cultures — and then make your very own during a one-day workshop taught by Ukrainian pysanky artist Janet Hundrieser.

The workshop begins at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 8, in room 2380, Kresge Hall, 1880 Campus Drive, Evanston. Register here.

Side-eye your sources

Ever find yourself wondering if what you’re reading online is legit? Learn to cut through the noise with a workshop from Northwestern Libraries. Practice hands-on source evaluation and leave with practical strategies to recognize misinformation, strengthen your research and feel more confident navigating the digital world.

The workshop is at 1 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 10, in the forum (2 South), University Library, 1970 Campus Drive, Evanston. Register here.

Passport to learning

Learn about Northwestern’s credit-bearing study abroad programs at the study abroad fair. Chat with program providers, Global Learning Office advisers and student ambassadors who can share their experience studying abroad.

The fair runs from noon-3 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 11, in the Louis Room, Norris University Center, 1999 Campus Drive, Evanston.
