This month, soccer kicks off, community movie night returns and more

It may be August, but there’s still plenty of summer to be enjoyed. On the calendar this month are opportunities to relax by the lake, hear what students have been working on this summer and more. As always, all are welcome!

Ending on a high note

Hear a free concert from participants in the summer Intensive Vocal Performance Seminar.  

The performance is at 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 1, in the Ryan Opera Theater, Ryan Center for the Musical Arts, 70 Arts Circle Drive, Evanston.

See the stars

Tour Northwestern’s historic Dearborn Observatory and look through its telescope during weekly public viewing hours. The first hour is by reservation only, but the second is open to walk-ins.

Public viewing hours begin each Friday at 9 p.m. at Dearborn Observatory, 2131 Tech Drive, Evanston. Sign up for the reserved tour waitlist or walk in starting at 10 p.m.

Lunch with a view

Enjoy an al fresco meal and live music during Lunch on the Lake. Bring your own lunch or purchase one in the Norris University Center food court. Those who pre-register can also receive a free picnic blanket.

Lunches are at noon on Wednesday, Aug. 13, and Wednesday, Aug. 20, on the South Lawn of Norris University Center, 1999 Campus Drive, Evanston. Register for one or both here.

Lilo, lakeside

Watch “Lilo & Stitch” (2025) lakeside at Northwestern’s annual community movie night. Drinks, popcorn and candy will be provided while supplies lasts, and attendees can enter raffle for tickets to various Northwestern sporting events.

The screening is at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 14, at Northwestern Medicine Field at Martin Stadium, 2235 Campus Drive, Evanston. RSVP here.

Poetry and prose

Hear original work from faculty and recent creative writing graduates of the MFA in Prose and Poetry and MA in Writing programs.

The reading is at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 19, at Brothers K Coffeehouse, 500 Main Street, Evanston.

Soccer laces up

Men’s soccer officially opens the 2025 season with a home game versus Eastern Illinois on Aug. 21. Meanwhile, women’s soccer hosts its home opener versus Kent State on Aug. 24.

Men’s soccer takes the field at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 21. Women’s soccer plays on Sunday, Aug. 24, kickoff time TBA. Games are at Northwestern Medicine Field at Martin Stadium, 2235 Campus Drive, Evanston. Matches are free to attend.

All-star autographs

Northwestern Football’s Meet the Team Night returns to kick off the 2025 season. Meet this year’s football student-athletes and receive autographs from players of your choosing. Team posters will be provided.

The event is at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 23, in Ryan Fieldhouse, 2333 Campus Drive, Evanston. Register here.

Do a good deed

The Northwestern University Staff Advisory Council hosts a campus blood drive as part of The We Give Blood Drive. While this event is planned with staff in mind, all are welcome. Everyone who donates on behalf of Northwestern will receive a gift card and a raffle entry for two tickets to Northwestern’s Oct. 4 football game.

The drive begins at noon on Wednesday, Aug. 27, at Ryan Fieldhouse, 2333 Campus Drive, Evanston. Register here.

Rising startups

Jumpstart, The Garage’s pre-accelerator program, hosts its Demo Day. Teams will showcase and pitch the startups they’ve been refining all summer for the chance to win from a $10,000 prize pool. Attendees cast their votes to award the Audience Favorite Prize.

Demo Day is at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 27, in Suite 2300, Henry Crown Sports Pavilion, 2311 Campus Drive, Evanston. Register here to attend in person or virtually.

Astronomy, asked and answered

Join experts from the Center for Interdisciplinary Exploration and Research in Astrophysics for an Astronomer Evening at Dearborn Observatory. The night will begin with a short introduction to a topic in astronomy, followed by an open Q&A, interactive demonstrations and chances to look through the telescope.
