We hope you’re staying cool in the summer heat. If you’re on the hunt for summer activities, catch The Block Museum of Art’s “Woven Being: Art for Zhegagoynak/Chicagoland” before its final day on July 13, or check out one of the events listed below. As always, all are welcome!

See the stars

Tour Northwestern’s historic Dearborn Observatory and look through its telescope during weekly public viewing hours. The first hour is by reservation only, but the second is open to walk-ins.

Public viewing hours begin each Friday at 9 p.m. at Dearborn Observatory, 2131 Tech Drive, Evanston. Sign up for the reserved tour waitlist or walk in starting at 10 p.m.

Walk and talk

Join Weinberg’s Eli Suzukovich for a gallery talk discussing the natural materials found in The Block’s “Woven Being” exhibition and their cultural significance to Indigenous peoples. Then, Suzukovich will lead a campus walk discussing the history of the Evanston shoreline, vegetation on campus and the impacts of climate change.

The talk is at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 12, at The Block, 40 Arts Circle Drive, Evanston. Register here.

The world is your movie theater

Summer Cinema is back again with outdoor screenings of family-friendly movies. Bring your lawn chairs, blankets and a picnic to enjoy a film under the stars. Come early to enjoy free activities and popcorn.

“Wicked” will screen on Thursday, July 17, and “A Minecraft Movie” will screen on Thursday, July 24. Check-in begins at 6:30 p.m. and movies will be screened at dusk (around 7:30 p.m.) on the Arts Green Lawn, south of Pick Staiger Concert Hall, 50 Arts Circle Drive, Evanston. Register to attend one or both here.

Sculpture and sound

As part of the exhibition “City in a Garden: Queer Art and Activism in Chicago,” Weinberg’s Brendan Fernandes presents “The Rite,” a collaborative performance within a sculptural and sound installation.

Performances are at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Friday, July 18, at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, 220 E. Chicago Ave., Chicago. Purchase museum tickets here.

Astronomy, asked and answered

Join experts from the Center for Interdisciplinary Exploration and Research in Astrophysics for an Astronomer Evening at Dearborn Observatory. The night will begin with a short introduction to a topic in astronomy, followed by an open Q&A, interactive demonstrations and chances to look through the telescope.

The event starts at 9 p.m. on Friday, July 25, at Dearborn Observatory, 2131 Tech Drive, Evanston.
