Spring quarter is drawing to a close, which means it’s time for our annual spring opera and the VentureCat showcase. Here’s what else to put on your calendar this week. As always, all are welcome!

In great companies

Watch six outstanding teams of student entrepreneurs deliver pitches at the public showcase of VentureCat, Northwestern’s annual student startup competition. Vote for the recipient of the audience favorite prize and learn who will take home the $100,000 grand prize.

The showcase is at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, May 28, in White Auditorium, Kellogg Global Hub, 2211 Campus Drive, Evanston. Register here to attend in person or virtually.

‘Temporal Territories’

See short films by members of COUSIN, a film collective created to support Indigenous artists who are expanding traditional definitions and experimenting with form and genre. COUSIN co-founder Adam Piron and artist Lindsay McIntyre will take part in a post-screening conversation.

The screening is at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 29, at The Block Museum of Art, 40 Arts Circle Drive, Evanston. Register here.

Arias and intrigue

In “L’incoronazione di Poppea,” Poppea, the mistress of Emperor Nerone, is determined to ascend the throne — whatever the costs. In a world where gods influence mortal affairs, virtue doesn’t always triumph. This story of love, deception, murder and betrayal is as relevant today as it was in composer Claudio Monteverdi’s time.

Performances are at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 29; Friday, May 30; and Saturday, May 31,  as well as at 3 p.m. on Sunday, June 1. All performances are in Cahn Auditorium, 600 Emerson Street, Evanston. Buy tickets here.

Celebrating survivors

Join Lurie Cancer Center and Northwestern Medicine on National Cancer Survivors Day for the 32nd Annual Cancer Survivors’ Celebration Walk & 5K. Anyone whose life has been touched by cancer is invited to connect and celebrate with music, family activities, refreshments and more.

The celebration begins at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, June 1, at Arvey Field, Grant Park, 1100 South Columbus Drive, Chicago. Register here.

The search for life

Barbara Sherwood Lollar, recipient of the 2024 Nemmers Prize in Earth Sciences, delivers a lecture on recent discoveries about water and life in Earth’s deep subsurface and the insights they can offer us about life on our planet and elsewhere in the universe.

The lecture is at 5 p.m. on Monday, June 2, in Segal Visitors Center, 1841 Sheridan Road, Evanston. Register here.
