Body of Mohammed Ramzan recovered

Northwestern community mourns the loss

EVANSTON - Police and fire department officials notified Northwestern University Monday evening that the body of Mohammed Ramzan has been recovered from the North Shore Channel in Lincolnwood.

Ramzan, 19, who enrolled as a first-year in the current class at Northwestern, had been missing since he fell overboard this morning while practicing with the Northwestern University club crew team.

A search had been underway since early morning for Ramzan, who is from Auburn, Washington.

“We extend our deepest condolences and heartfelt sympathies to Mohammed’s family and friends for this tragic loss,” said Vice President for Student Affairs Patricia Telles-Irvin. “The loss affects us all, and we urge all members of our community to reach out and support one another.”

“We are grateful to Northwestern University Police, Illinois State Police and all the law enforcement agencies and fire departments involved in the search,” she said. “We extend our thoughts and support to everyone who knew Mohammed during his time here.”

Telles-Irvin said this loss will affect many deeply, now and in the future, and Northwestern University officials urged members of the University community to take advantage, as needed, of the support services available to them, such as Counseling and Psychological Services or the Chaplain’s office.

“As we remember Mohammed, we must be intentional about taking care of each other,” she said. “This is a time for pulling together and supporting one another.”
