Northwestern Music in July and August

EVANSTON, ILL. --- Orchestral, instrumental, band, jazz and choral events performed in air-conditioned venues are among the ways music fans keep cool each summer on Northwestern University’s Evanston campus.

The University’s Henry and Leigh Bienen School of Music will present three evening concerts by Northwestern’s Summer Band; programs featuring works by Mahler, Beethoven and Schumann by the Northwestern University Summer Orchestra; and a concert that includes “In Ecclesiis,” Gabrieli’s work for chorus, brass, organ and piano. A Sunday afternoon oboe workshop recital is one of several admission-free recitals.

In addition, from mid-June through early August, the Bienen School is offering guitar, voice, violin, trombone and oboe workshops; symposia on conducting, wind music and percussion; and a vocal career seminar that can be audited by members of the general public. Concert ticket prices are indicated in two ranges: the first for the general public and the second for full-time students with IDs. Northwestern faculty and staff with a valid WildCARD ID receive a 15 percent discount off the general public ticket price.

SUMMER CONCERTS

JUNE 2013

Violin Institute Recital, 7:30 p.m. Saturday, June 29, Regenstein Recital Hall. The program will feature performances by Northwestern’s Violin Institute participants. Admission is free.

Trombonist Michael Mulcahy, 3 p.m. Sunday, June 30, Regenstein Recital Hall. Chicago Symphony Orchestra trombonist and principal trombone of the Grand Teton Music Festival, Bienen School faculty member Mulcahy has served as principal trombone of the Cologne Radio, Melbourne and Tasmanian symphonies. He also is a member of the Chicago Chamber Musicians and Summit Brass and is active as a soloist, teacher, lecturer and clinician throughout the world. Mulcahy will be accompanied by pianist Yoko Yamada-Selvaggio. Admission is free.

Violin Institute Recital, 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 3, Regenstein Recital Hall. The program will feature performances by Northwestern’s Violin Institute participants. Admission is free.

Oboe Workshop Recital, 3 p.m. Sunday, July 7, Lutkin Hall. The program will feature performances by Northwestern students and faculty. Admission is free.

Northwestern University Summer Orchestra, 7:30 p.m. Friday, July 12, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Robert G. Hasty directs Northwestern’s summer orchestra in a program of Chaminade’s Flute Concertino in D Major, featuring flutist Gerard Dutton and Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 in D Major. Tickets are $6 for the general public and $4 for students with IDs.

Northshore Concert Band, 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 17, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Daniel J. Farris directs the ensemble in an evening of band classics and march favorites. Tickets are $6 for the general public and $4 for students with IDs.

Northwestern University Summer Jazz Band, 7:30 p.m. Thursday, July 25, Regenstein Recital Hall. Saxophonist Chris Madsen, the Bienen School’s administrative coordinator of jazz studies, directs the summer jazz band in a program of original works by group members and jazz standards by well-known composers and arrangers. Tickets are $6 for the general public and $4 for students with IDs.

Northwestern University Summer Chorus, 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 30, Alice Millar Chapel. Stephen Alltop, director of music for Alice Millar Chapel, conducts Northwestern’s summer chorus in an array of selections for voice, brass, organ and piano. The program includes Gabrieli’s “In Ecclesiis” and Mathias’ “Let All the People Praise Thee, O God.” Great poetry will be heard in works by Frank Ticheli and Eric Whitacre as well as in Ned Rorem’s Shakespearean tribute “Present Laughter” for chorus, brass and piano. The concert will also feature “The Bluebird” by C.V. Stanford, “Gabriel” by Caldwell and Ivory and Whitacre’s “Leonardo Dreams of His Flying Machine.” The San Marco Brass Ensemble will also perform. Tickets are $6 for the general public and $4 for students with IDs.

AUGUST 2013

Northwestern University Summer Orchestra, 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 1, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Robert G. Hasty directs Northwestern’s summer orchestra in a program that includes Beethoven’s Violin Concerto in D Major, featuring violinist Jing Qiao and Schumann’s Symphony No. 3 in E-flat Major (“Rhenish”). CONSTRUCTION ALERT

Due to construction on the south end of campus, Arts Circle Drive is currently closed to traffic. Free parking is still available on weekends and after 4 p.m. weekdays in the two-level lakefront structure located on Campus Drive. After turning onto Campus Drive from Sheridan Road, enter the parking structure on the right by way of ramps leading to the upper and lower levels. For vehicles with handicap placards, reserved spaces are available on weekends and after 4 p.m. weekdays in the lot directly west of Louis Hall.
