Redevelopment of Norris University Center’s East Lawn to begin this summer

EVANSTON, Ill. ---“Things that Hover,” “Design it! Build it” and “Create a Musical From Scratch” are among the many new hourlong workshops offered on the Evanston campus during Northwestern University’s 19th annual Take Our Daughters & Sons to Work Day.
The Thursday, April 25 daylong event -- which will be observed on the Evanston and Chicago campuses -- is open to the pre-teen and teenage relatives and friends of Northwestern staff and faculty members.
More than 350 children aged 8 through 16 are expected to participate in 54 career-related Evanston campus sessions and 24 Chicago campus workshops. The day’s program includes a choice of three morning tours emphasizing science, technology and mathematics, followed by lunch with sponsors. Participating children also can observe their Northwestern sponsors at work during a two-hour mid-afternoon period of job shadowing.
The official Evanston and Chicago campus registration has closed. Since online registration was available for the first time this year workshops filled up quickly.
The national public education program, originally established by the Ms. Foundation and now administered by the Take our Daughters and Sons to Work Day Foundation, aims to expose pre-teens and teens to careers open to all genders and show the value and possibilities related to higher education.
Tour tracks on the Evanston campus are for children aged 8 to 12, for girls only, or for 13-to-16-year-olds. All three include workshops in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Chicago campus workshops focus on law, law enforcement, medicine, physical therapy, martial arts, genetic counseling and more, and include a three-track tour for 13-to-16-year olds.
