Message from President Schapiro Regarding Boston Tragedy

Dear Members of the Northwestern University community,

As I’m sure was the case for all of you, I was truly shocked and saddened by the horrific attack that occurred yesterday in Boston. It was a startling and powerful reminder of the fragility of life and how things can change in literally an instant.  Our hearts go out to those killed or injured in the attack and to their families, and on behalf of the University, I extend our sympathy and support.

I know that many of us at Northwestern have friends and family in the Boston area and in the community of runners, for whom participating in the Boston Marathon is a significant achievement.  We have not heard yet of any Northwestern alumni or other members of our community who were injured, but we will continue to monitor the situation. In the meantime, on behalf of the University, I thank the police, fire and medical professionals who responded quickly and bravely. And I know that the entire Northwestern community joins me in extending our support to those who are being affected by this tragic event.

Morton Schapiro
President and Professor
