EVANSTON, Ill. -- Scholar and author Vijay Prashad will discuss “The Outsider: Hatred and Fear in a Declining America” when he delivers the Allison Davis Lecture Wednesday, Nov. 14, at Northwestern University.
Prashad, professor of international studies and Kellner Chair in South Asian History at Trinity College, will speak at 5:15 p.m. in the auditorium of Harris Hall, 1881 Sheridan Road, on the University’s Evanston campus. His free and public presentation will be followed by a reception.
A frequent commentator on world affairs, Prashad is the author of more than a dozen books, most recently of “Arab Spring, Libyan Winter” and “Uncle Swami: Being South Asian in America.” He has appeared frequently on the television/radio show “Democracy Now,” written for The Nation magazine, and he is a blogger for counterpunch.org and Znet.
Prashad is a contributing editor for the online magazine “Naked Punch” and a member of the editorial boards of the scholarly journals “Amerasia Journal” and “Left History.” His monthly column “Letter from America” appears in Frontline, an English language current events affairs magazine published in India. He writes frequently for South Asian publications.
Prashad’s book “The Darker Nations: A People’s History of the Third World” was chosen as the best nonfiction book of 2008 by the Asian American Writers’ Workshop and awarded the 2009 Muzaffar Ahmad Book Prize. His other books include “Fat Cats and Running Dogs,” “Karma of Brown Folk” and “Everybody Was Kung Fu Fighting: Afro-Asian Connections and the Myth of Cultural Purity.”
The Allison Davis Lecture is sponsored by Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences, the African American studies department and the Kreeger Wolf Endowment. It honors Davis, the first African American to receive tenure at a non-historically black university. Previous Davis lecturers have included Mary Frances Berry, Glen Loury and William Julius Wilson.
