Dazzling Research Images

EVANSTON, Ill. --- Science in Society, Northwestern University’s office dedicated to science outreach and public engagement, revealed the winners of its 2012 Scientific Images Contest Sept. 23 at the Noyes Cultural Arts Center in Evanston.

For the second year in a row, graduate student Andrew Koltonow received first place, this year for his image of the organic macromolecule graphene oxide. He is a member of the research groups of materials science and engineering professors Jiaxing Huang and Samuel Stupp.

The five winning images and seven honorable mentions will be on display through Oct. 31 in Room 106 at the Noyes Cultural Arts Center, 927 Noyes St. This is the third year the popular contest has been held.

Each piece, judged by a panel of local artists, scientists and community leaders, is representative of real Northwestern research. Submitted by University faculty, students and staff, the images cover a wide range of disciplines including medicine, chemistry, engineering and nanotechnology.
