Children Discover the Magic of Music at Northwestern

Kids Fare 2012-13 series begins Oct. 6 on Evanston campus

EVANSTON, Ill. --- Northwestern University’s Marching Band, Brass Ensemble, Symphonic Band and Chamber Orchestra and special guests, including the Jump Rhythm Jazz Project, are all part of the 2012-13 Kids Fare series. 

Presented by the Henry and Leigh Bienen School of Music, the series of six hourlong Saturday morning programs, designed for children aged 3 to 8 and their families, provides a comfortable and fun introduction to music through song, guided listening experiences and creative movement. The events listed below are held at 10:30 a.m. on Northwestern’s Evanston campus at Welsh-Ryan Arena, 2705 Ashland Ave., or Pick-Staiger Concert Hall, 50 Arts Circle Drive, as noted.

2012-13 Kids Fare Season Programs

Oct. 6 - “March with the Band,” the opening event at Welsh-Ryan Arena, lets young participants experience the drum line, flag corps and Northwestern University’s Wildcat Marching Band, led by Daniel J. Farris. Children are invited to bring their favorite toy instrument and march with the band at the end of the program.

Nov. 17 - “All About Brass” at Pick-Staiger Concert Hall will showcase the range and boldness of brass instruments in the Northwestern University Brass Ensemble, led by Gail Williams.

Jan. 26 - “Band Illusions” will extol the power and excitement of combined woodwinds, brass and percussion. The Pick-Staiger concert will feature the Northwestern University Symphonic Band, led by Timothy J. Robblee.

Feb. 16 - Wind-generated sounds are the focus of “Air Raid,” as Bienen School musicians demonstrate the sometimes unexpected possibilities of applying air to a blade of grass, kazoo, harmonica, slide whistle, trombone, garden hose, flute, seashell, oboe reed, pan pipe and other objects. The program will be held at Pick-Staiger. 

April 20 - “Jump to Conclusions” with the Jump Rhythm Jazz Project, led by artistic director Billy Siegenfeld. The Chicago-based dance ensemble will explore a variety of sights, sounds and rhythms with its seamless blend of motion and music at Pick-Staiger.

May 11 - The Kids Fare season concludes at Pick-Staiger with “My Kingdom for an Orchestra!” Brass, woodwind, percussion and string musicians of the Northwestern University Chamber Orchestra will present a beautiful and fun palette of musical styles under the leadership of Robert G. Hasty.

Single tickets for these 2012-13 season events are $6 for the general public and $4 for children. Families save 15 percent off the single-ticket price by purchasing a Family Fun Pack -- two adult passes and two children’s passes to all six concerts for $108. Each Fun Pack entitles the buyer to two free additional children’s passes per concert for siblings, cousins or friends who would also like to attend.
