Northwestern University Summer 2012 Music Calendar

EVANSTON, Ill. --- A performance by Bienen School faculty member and Chicago Symphony Orchestra trombonist Michael Mulcahy and an evening of band classics and march favorites by the Northshore Concert Band are among the highlights of the Northwestern University Summer 2012 music season.

Other programs to be presented by the Henry and Leigh Bienen School of Music include jazz, orchestral and choral concerts and violin recitals.

All programs listed below are open to the public. They take place on Northwestern University’s Evanston campus at Pick-Staiger Concert Hall, 50 Arts Circle Drive; Regenstein Recital Hall, 60 Arts Circle Drive; or Alice Millar Chapel, 1870 Sheridan Road, as noted. 

Ticket prices are indicated in two ranges: the first for the general public and the second for full-time students with IDs. Northwestern faculty and staff with a valid WildCARD ID receive a 15 percent discount off the general public ticket price.

SUMMER WORKSHOPS 

Members of the general public can register to audit summer oboe workshops or flute and piccolo or trumpet or trombone master classes, or participate in a Violin Institute program focused on technical ability, musical skills and knowledge of repertoire. A Conducting and Wind Music Symposium, Percussion Symposium and a Vocal Career Seminar are also planned. For costs and details visit www.music.northwestern.edu. RESTRICTED ACCESS TO PICK-STAIGER CONCERT HALL 

There will be restricted access this summer to Northwestern’s Arts Circle Drive due to a construction project on the south end of campus that will alter the normal route to and from Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. As of Monday, June 25, Arts Circle Drive will be closed to traffic, and concertgoers should allow extra time for parking. After turning onto Campus Drive from Sheridan Road, patrons can enter the two-level parking structure on the right by way of ramps leading to the upper and lower parking structure levels. JUNE 2012 

Workshop Concert, Violin Institute Recital, 7:30 p.m. Saturday, June 30, Regenstein Recital Hall. The program will feature performances by Violin Institute participants. Admission is free. 

JULY 2012 

Steans Music Institute Recital, 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 3, Regenstein Recital Hall. Each summer, the Ravinia Festival’s Steans Institute invites young artists from around the world to study with its stellar faculty. In cooperation with the Bienen School’s Summer Violin Institute, several of these budding Steans Institute virtuosos will perform at Northwestern. Admission is free.

Northwestern University Summer Band, 7 p.m. Thursday, July 5, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Daniel J. Farris will direct the Northwestern Summer Band in an evening of works including Robert Russell Bennett’s “Suite of Old American Dances,” Eric Whitacre’s “The Seal Lullaby,” Mark Williams’ “Fantasy on ‘Yankee Doodle’,” Pierre La Plante’s “American Riversongs” and Edward Franko Goldman’s “The Chimes of Liberty.” Tickets are $6 for the general public and $4 for students with IDs. 

Violin Institute Recital, 7:30 p.m. Thursday, July 5, Regenstein Recital Hall. The program will feature performances by Violin Institute participants. Admission is free. 

Faculty trombonist Michael Mulcahy, 2 p.m. Sunday, July 8, Regenstein Recital Hall. A member of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO) trombone section since his appointment by Sir Georg Solti in 1989, Mulcahy has performed and taught throughout the world. He has appeared as a soloist with the CSO under Daniel Barenboim as well as with the Bavarian Radio Symphony, Hilversum Radio Symphony and Melbourne Symphony. His program includes Albrechtsberger’s Concerto for Alto Trombone, featuring pianist Yoko Yamada-Selvaggio. Admission is free. 

Northwestern University Summer Orchestra, 7:30 p.m. Sunday, July 8, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Robert G. Hasty will conduct the Summer Orchestra in a program that includes Boris Tchaikovsky’s Concerto for Cello and Orchestra, featuring cellist Miron Yampolsky, and Sibelius’s Symphony No. 2 in D Major. Tickets are $6 for the general public and $4 for students with IDs. 

Northshore Concert Band, 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 18, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Daniel J. Farris will conduct the Northshore Concert Band in an evening of band classics and march favorites. Tickets are $6 for the general public and $4 for students with IDs. 

Northwestern University Summer Jazz Band, 7:30 p.m. Thursday, July 19, Regenstein Recital Hall. Chris Madsen will conduct the Summer Jazz Band in a program featuring original works by group members and jazz standards by well-known composers and arrangers. Tickets are $6 for the general public and $4 for students with IDs. 

Northwestern University Summer Chorus, “Vibrant Voices of the World,” 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 24, Alice Millar Chapel. Stephen Alltop and Guillermo Munoz Kuster will conduct the Summer Chorus in a program celebrating music from across the world, featuring pianist Jerad Mosbey. Choral favorites include John Rutter’s “Te Deum,” Eric Whitacre’s “Water Night,” Stephen Paulus’ “Pilgrim’s Hymn,” Aaron Copland’s “Zion’s Walls” and Celtic, Latin American and North American folk music gems. The sounds of flute, violin, percussion and an Aeolian-Skinner organ are part of this eclectic music event. Tickets are $6 for the general public and $4 for students with IDs. 

Northwestern University Summer Band, 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 25, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Mallory Thompson will conduct the Summer Band in a program that includes Steven Barton’s “Hill Country Flourishes,” Gordon Jacob’s “William Byrd Suite” and K. Singleton’s arrangement of Gustav Holst’s “I Love My Love.” Christopher Theofanidis’ “Sweet Like That,” Gerald Finzi’s “Lyric Suite,” Edwin Franko Goldman’s “On the Mall,” Karl King’s “Rough Riders” and M. L. Lake’s arrangement of von Weber’s Concertino for Clarinet and Orchestra in C Minor, featuring clarinetist Steven Gooden, will also be performed. Tickets are $6 for the general public and $4 for students with IDs. 

Northwestern University Summer Orchestra, 7:30 p.m. Thursday, July 26, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Robert G. Hasty will conduct the Northwestern University Summer Orchestra in a performance of Copland’s Clarinet Concerto, featuring clarinetist Andrew Hudson, and Debussy’s “La Mer.” Tickets are $6 for the general public and $4 for students with IDs.
