Northwestern University June 2012 Music Calendar

EVANSTON, Ill. --- Several June concerts at Northwestern University will honor two retiring Henry and Leigh Bienen School of Music faculty members -- Frederick Hemke, professor of saxophone, and Walfrid Kujala, professor of flute.

The Bienen School will also present band, guitar and saxophone events and a two-way Internet guitar master class held in conjunction with the Cleveland Institute’s 12th annual Classical Guitar Weekend.

All programs listed below are open to the public. They take place on Northwestern University’s Evanston campus at Pick-Staiger Concert Hall, 50 Arts Circle Drive; Regenstein Recital Hall, 60 Arts Circle Drive; or Lutkin Hall, 700 University Place, as noted. 

Ticket prices are indicated in two ranges: the first for the general public and the second for full-time students with IDs. Northwestern faculty and staff with a valid WildCARD ID receive a 15 percent discount off the general public ticket price.

JUNE 2012 

Symphonic Band, “Light and Dark,” 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 1, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Timothy J. Robblee will conduct a program featuring Russell Peck’s “Cave,” Andrew Rindfleisch’s “The Light Fantastic,” Jonathan Newman’s “Moon by Night” and Kevin Puts’ “Chorus of Light.” Tickets are $6 for the general public and $4 for students with IDs.

Anne Waller and Jason Vieaux Guitar Master Class, 11 a.m. Saturday, June 2, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall, Rehearsal Room. Bienen School guitar faculty member Anne Waller and Cleveland Institute of Music’s guitar department head Jason Vieaux, will lead a two-way Internet master class in conjunction with the Cleveland Institute’s 12th annual Classical Guitar Weekend. Waller and Vieaux will coach guitar students from both institutions. Admission is free. Patrons should use the Pick-Staiger Ticket Office entrance on the south side of the building. 

Northwestern University Alumni Saxophone Recital, 5 p.m. Saturday, June 2, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Former students of Frederick Hemke will join together for a recital of contemporary works for saxophone. Featured works include Perry Goldstein’s “Mischief,” Steven Galante’s “Saxsounds III (Diminishing Returns),” Russell Peterson’s Sonata for alto saxophone and guitar, Shin-ichiro Ikebe’s “Bivalence V” and Matthew Orlovich’s “Crazy Logic.” Admission is free.

Kumoi Saxophone Quartet and Northwestern University Saxophone Ensemble, 7:30 p.m. Saturday, June 2, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Tokyo native soprano saxophonist Masato Kumoi formed the Kumoi Quartet with alto saxophonist Wataru Sato, tenor saxophonist Kazuyuki Hayashida and baritone saxophonist Takahiro Nishio. The Kumoi Saxophone Quartet will perform on the first half of the program. During the second half, the Northwestern University Saxophone Ensemble will premiere Stephen Syverud’s “fred til alle mennesker,” Robert LeMay’s “Quadrichromie” with alto saxophone soloist Sean Patayanikorn and a work by Ryo Noda. Tickets are $8 for the general public and $5 for students with IDs. 

Saxophone Orchestra Monster Concert, “A Celebration of Frederick Hemke,” 3 p.m. Sunday, June 3, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Stephen Alltop will conduct a celebratory concert honoring Northwestern’s retiring Louis and Elsie Snydacker Eckstein Professor of Music, saxophonist Frederick L. Hemke. Hemke has recorded with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Kronos Quartet and Stockholm Philharmonic. The program includes works by M. William Karlins, Mark Engebretson, John M. Kennedy, Marilyn Shrude, Paul Creston, Bela Bartok and Edison Denisov. Tickets are $8 for the general public and $5 for students with IDs. 

Walfrid Kujala Tribute Concert, 7:30 p.m. Monday, June 4, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. The concert will celebrate retiring flute professor Walfrid Kujala’s 50 years of teaching at Northwestern. The performance features seven of his most accomplished current and former students -- Mindy Kaufmann, Zart Dombourian-Eby, Robert Cronin, Jonathan Keeble, Erinn Frechette, Lindsey Goodman and Kristin Carr -- with piano accompanist Nolan Pearson. The program includes music by Henri Dutilleux, Vivaldi, Russell Pinkston and Schubert as well as the world premiere of a trio for flute/piccolo, percussion and piano by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer and Northwestern alumnus Joseph Schwantner. Tickets are $8 for the general public and $5 for students with IDs. 

Opera Scenes Gala, 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 8, Lutkin Hall. The concert is the culmination of the Naked Voice Institute, a weeklong workshop focused on developing a well-rounded approach to vocal performance and pedagogy. The program will feature excerpts from “La Boheme,” “Die Zauberflote,” “La Traviata,” “Lakme” and “Don Giovanni.” Tickets are $6 for the general public and $4 for students.

Guitarists Oscar Ghiglia, Anne Waller, and Mark Maxwell, 7 p.m. Saturday, June 9, Lutkin Hall. In this opening concert of the Bienen School’s Summer Guitar Workshop, guest artist Oscar Ghiglia, Bienen School faculty member Anne Waller and DePaul University guitar studies coordinator Mark Maxwell will perform solos, duos, and trios by Frescobaldi, Merchi, Sor and Granados. Tickets are $16 for the general public and $8 for students with IDs.

Guitar Workshop Concert, 7 p.m. Thursday, June 14, Lutkin Hall. The concert features talented high school and college students performing classical guitar masterworks by Bach, Sor, Carulli, Turina and Albeniz. Admission is free. 

Violin Institute Recital, 7:30 p.m. Saturday, June 30, Regenstein Recital Hall. The program will feature performances by Violin Institute participants. Admission is free.
