The following message was sent Monday, May 30, to Northwestern University undergraduate students.
Dear Northwestern community,
It is with great sadness that we share the news that Daniel Perelman, a first-year Weinberg College student, has passed away following a plane crash last week in Wisconsin. We are in contact with Daniel’s family and friends and are extending support to them during this very difficult time.
Though he was only at Northwestern for a year, Daniel was an important member of our community, both inside and outside the classroom. He was studying in the Integrated Science Program, and he made an early impression on his science faculty and TAs alike. Professor Karl Scheidt had Daniel in his organic chemistry course and met with him often throughout Winter Quarter. “It was a privilege to be his teacher, if only for just 10 weeks,” Scheidt said.
A resident of Willard Residential College, Daniel also was communications chair of Northwestern’s Aviation Club and was active in Northwestern Chabad, a division of Tanenbaum Chabad House.
As grief impacts us all in different ways, we have a variety of University resources available for you, and we encourage you to reach out if you are in need of support. Students can contact Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) at 847-491-2151, the Dean of Students Office at 847-491-8430 or the Residential Life staff in their building. Free, virtual mental health support also is available for all students through the TimelyCare app. Students, faculty and staff can connect with Religious & Spiritual Life, as well as Northwestern Hillel, and staff have access to benefits through the Employee Assistance Program.
Staff from CAPS and Religious & Spiritual Life will facilitate a community gathering tomorrow, May 31, from 6 to 7 p.m. in the B72 Engagement Center at Willard Residential College, 1865 Sherman Avenue. All are welcome to attend.
We mourn Daniel’s loss together with his family, friends and classmates. At moments like this, we remain grateful for the support and care of our Wildcat community. As we move into the last part of our academic year, please reach out for help, and take care of yourselves and each other in the days ahead.
With gratitude and care,
Julie Payne-Kirchmeier
