How realistic are Biden’s climate promises?

EVANSTON, Ill. — Many observers hope that President-elect Joe Biden will quickly restore federal climate change measures and reverse the U.S. withdrawal from international commitments, such as the Paris Agreement. While others wonder if a bold “Green New Deal” could be feasible while creating the economic lift it promises.

 In a webinar at noon CST on Tuesday, Jan. 19,experts from Northwestern University will discuss the hopes for a new climate and environmental policy under the incoming Biden administration.

About the experts:

Mar Reguant is associate professor of economics at Northwestern. Her research deals with the economics of energy, with an emphasis on electricity and the pollution associated with electricity generation.

Michael Barsa is co-director of the Environmental Law Concentration at Northwestern’s Pritzker School of Law. He previously litigated numerous high-profile environmental and natural resources cases and his classes cover environmental law and regulatory issues.

Mary McGrath is assistant professor of political science at Northwestern. Her research has explored how public opinion drives support for, or opposition to, ambitious climate policies and affects compliance with international agreements.

Anto Mohsin is assistant professor at Northwestern University in Qatar. His teaching and research interests include environmental, energy and disaster studies. He is currently working on a book about the socio-political history of electrification in post-independence Indonesia.

The panel will be moderated by Klaus Weber, Thomas G. Ayers Chair in Energy Resource Management at the Kellogg School of Management and deputy director at Northwestern Buffett.
