Meet the Fulbrighters

Northwestern scholars make an impact felt around the world

Twenty-three Northwestern students and alumni are among the 2019–20 class of globe-trotting winners of the Fulbright U.S. Student Program — one of the most widely recognized and respected international exchange programs. Awardees represent undergraduate and graduate students from a range of schools and departments but are united by their enthusiasm to learn about and make an impact on the world.

The flagship international educational exchange program of the U.S. government, the Fulbright U.S. Student Program provides grants to teach, conduct research, study or participate in specialized internships.

Northwestern ranks seventh among peer institutions in producing Fulbright Students this year, with participants based all over the world, including Mexico, Malawi and Malaysia.

For more than a decade, Northwestern has ranked among the top Fulbright-producing research institutions in the country. The University is one of a handful of universities to appear on every “top producing” Fulbright U.S. Student Program list published by the Chronicle of Higher Education since 2005. This year, Northwestern is also a top producer of Fulbright Scholars.

The Fulbright Student competition is administered at Northwestern through the Office of Fellowships. The Northwestern campus application deadline is always early September for awards that last an academic year. Graduating seniors, alumni, and graduate students with U.S. passports are eligible to apply through Northwestern.

The Fulbright Scholar competition is administered through the Buffett Institute for Global Affairs.
