College football fans waited 19 years to see Northwestern play Notre Dame, and they saw an entertaining, back-and-forth game Nov. 15 that ended with in a Wildcat win in overtime at Notre Dame Stadium.
After battling all afternoon, the Wildcats fell behind the 15th-ranked Irish by 11 late in the fourth quarter. Kicker Jack Mitchell capped a furious comeback with a 45-yard field goal with 25 seconds left in the fourth quarter. Mitchell then hit a 41-yard field goal -- his fourth of the game -- to give Northwestern a stunning 43-40 win.
The win, Northwestern’s fifth-ever at Notre Dame Stadium, is the team’s second this season over a ranked opponent after defeating No. 17 Wisconsin at Ryan Field earlier in the season.
