Bill Gates Tweets About Northwestern Philanthropy Class

World’s wealthiest man asks his Twitter followers for advice on charitable giving

EVANSTON, Ill. --- Fifty thousand dollars is pocket change to a man whose foundation gives away billions, but last week Bill Gates asked his 16 million Twitter followers how to give away just that amount.

The tweet – and a photo of Northwestern University School of Education and Policy Dean Penelope Peterson, former Spencer Foundation director Lauren Young and one of their students -- refers to a philanthropy course Peterson and Young co-taught at Northwestern. Students investigated and analyzed nonprofits before giving $50,000 to the nonprofit of their choice.

Since an article about the class appeared in the New York Times, the course -- with its focus on responsible charitable giving -- has been getting national attention. To learn more, check out the NYT story
