President Schapiro Journeys to China and Korea

EVANSTON, Ill. --- Northwestern University President Morton Schapiro recently wound up his 13-day trip to California and Asia with a celebration of Northwestern with alumni and students in Seoul, South Korea.

The trip took him to San Francisco for meetings July 16 to 19 and then to Xi’an and Shanghai in China for visits and meetings with students, alumni and local officials July 20 to 24, as well as to Seoul from July 24 to 28 for meetings with students and alumni before returning to Chicago.

President Schapiro also met with media for three interviews in China and three more in Korea, both print and broadcast. In Korea, they included the Korea Times newspaper, the Maeil Kyungjae (Economics Daily) newspaper and the SBS-CNBC program. SBS (fomerly, Seoul Broadcasting System) is one of the three South Korean national television networks.

In Xi’an, the president visited the Qin Shi Huang Terracotta Warriors and Horses Museum with Northwestern students from Beijing and had dinner with students. In Shanghai, President Schapiro had meetings with local officials and alumni and attended an alumni event.

In Seoul, the president joined Northwestern students, parents, alumni and friends for an alumni event to celebrate Northwestern and a discussion about the University’s strategic vision for the future and new initiatives that are distinguishing Northwestern among the top ranks of the world’s universities.

Among the senior staffers accompanying the president are Robert E. McQuinn, vice president for alumni relations and development, and Kathleen Gerlach, director of development.
