Generations of Songwriters Unite for One-Night Celebration

International songwriters showcase new work; Alan and Marilyn Bergman to be honored

EVANSTON, Ill. --- In a one-night-only sold-out concert, up-and-coming songwriters will share the stage with music industry powerhouses in an event celebrating the American songbook past, present and future.

The Johnny Mercer Foundation Songwriters Project: “Songwriters -- In Concert” at 8 p.m. Saturday, June 29, will feature 14 emerging songwriters who have spent a week work-shopping under the guidance of Jon Lind, award-winning songwriter and senior vice-president of artists and repertoire with Hollywood Records; Craig Carnelia, Tony-nominated composer and lyricist; and Lari White, three-time Grammy-winning singer and songwriter.

The 2013 Concert also will honor three-time Academy Award-winning lyricists Alan and Marilyn Bergman with the Johnny Mercer Artist of Distinction award. Through an exclusive video recording from their Los Angeles home, the Bergmans will share songs and stories from the duo’s 57-year collaboration in film, TV and on stage that resulted in such award-winning classics as "The Way We Were" and "The Windmills of Your Mind."

Presented by The Johnny Mercer Foundation (JMF) and the American Music Theatre Project (AMTP) at Northwestern University, “Songwriters -- In Concert” will take place in the Josephine Louis Theater, 20 Arts Circle Drive, on the Evanston campus.

For the first time, the JMF and AMTP annual collaboration will combine two separate events from years past -- the Songwriters Showcase and the Celebration Concert -- into one exciting concert filled with innovative new work from across the spectrum. According to AMTP Producing Director Heather Schmucker, “‘Songwriters -- in Concert’ will bring our audiences up-close and personal with the extraordinary writers and their master teachers.”

Audiences will hear 11 original songs from a variety of genres written and performed by the 2013 Mercer songwriters. The evening also will feature performances from Carnelia, Lind and White that include a medley from the Bergmans’ Academy Award-winning and Grammy-nominated score to “Yentl.”

The 2013 songwriters include a Broadway performer, a musician whose work has been featured on “Late Night with Conan O’Brien,” a Northwestern University alumni songwriting duo and several multi-lingual songwriters.

“Songwriters -- In Concert” is part of the Theatre and Interpretation Center (TIC) at Northwestern University’s 2013 SummerStage season. This event is currently sold-out; a wait list is available online at www.tic.northwestern.edu/summerstage or through the TIC Box Office at (847) 491-7282. Single tickets are $10 to $40.
