Career

Dr. Sherry Chou is a physician-scientist with clinical expertise in neurology, vascular neurology and neurocritical care.  Dr. Chou studied Medicine at McGill University (Montreal, Canada) and completed clinical training at the Massachusetts General Hospital, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and Harvard Medical School.  She served as assistant professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School, and subsequently as associate professor of Critical Care Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh.  She now serves as the Chief of Neurocritical Care Division and Associate Professor of Neurology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.  She also serves as a member of the Board of Directors of the Neurocritical Care Society.  Dr. Chou has served on multiple international consensus and guidelines committees for the American Heart Association and the Neurocritical Care Society.

Dr. Chou’s research program focuses on the role of inflammation and immune response in vascular brain injuries and biomarker discovery in critically ill patients, specifically in subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH).  Dr. Chou has extensive experience in building multicenter human biorepository and biomarker studies and clinical trials in SAH.  Dr. Chou’s expertise also includes clinical trials in the neurocritical care patient population, including services on clinical endpoints committees, data and safety monitoring boards and scientific advisory boards for clinical trials in strokes and brain injury. Shortly after the onset of COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Chou and colleagues founded and led the Global Consortium Study of Neurologic Manifestations of COVID-19 (GCS-NeuroCOVID) published the largest international cohort study on neurologic dysfunctions of COVID-19 capturing the first phases of this pandemic.
