Currently serving as associate vice chancellor for student life at the University of Minnesota Duluth, Smyth has built a portfolio that includes several student union programs, services and auxiliary operations. He has devoted his career to creating strong and inclusive communities through facilities, programs and services on college campuses.

He has managed small and large events, conferences, orientations and student activities, including bowling and billiards operations, outdoor recreation programs, student building manager programs, building renovations and expansions, a pottery studio and an art gallery.

Skilled at managing relationships across multiple constituent and stakeholder groups, he has a collaborative leadership style. He is dedicated to partnering with campus colleagues to remove barriers and create inclusive environments for all students, faculty, staff and community members.

At Minnesota Duluth, Smyth supervised the student union, student fees, self-operated dining, parking operations, sustainability office, trademarks, a self-operated bookstore, print shop and an ID card operation.

"I have served throughout my career in several college union and auxiliary roles, all while being tightly connected with students and my university community,” Smyth said. “Coming to Norris and serving the Northwestern students and community is an incredible opportunity, one that will allow me to establish relationships with high achieving colleagues in Norris, Student Affairs and across the University.”

Since its dedication in 1972, Norris University Center has been the hub for student activity at Northwestern.
