February may be the shortest month of the year, but there’s no shortage of events for you to enjoy. This week, the curtain rises on both “Museum” and the 2025 lacrosse season, the jazz orchestra takes you on a spiritual journey and more.

Put the art in sweetheart

Venture down to Artica Studios for an afternoon of Valentine’s Day-themed crafts. Eat some free sweets while painting a heart-shaped plate or mug.

Literary launch

Celebrate the first issues of “Northwestern Insider,” the official magazine of the Northwestern Prison Education Program, which publishes NPEP students’ personal essays, poems, critiques, fiction and more.

The celebration is at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 5, in room 1324, Kresge Hall, 1880 Campus Drive, Evanston.

Get in a jazzy spirit

Join the Northwestern University Jazz Orchestra for “Jazz on the Spiritual Side,” a Black History Month celebration featuring adaptations of spirituals, gospel music and Wynton Marsalis’s arrangement of the influential John Coltrane masterpiece “A Love Supreme.”

The concert is at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 6, at Galvin Recital Hall, Ryan Center for the Musical Arts, 70 Arts Circle Drive, Evanston. Buy tickets here.

First face-off

Lacrosse kicks off its 2025 season with a home game against Notre Dame. Come out to see the Lake Show as the team looks to battle its way back to the national championship.

Night at the ‘Museum’

On the final day of the exhibit “The Broken Silence,” the artists, collectors, browsers and curators — and the security guards who watch over it all — create their own zany pieces of art in the cutting and comic play “Museum.”

Performances are at 7:30 p.m. on both Friday, Feb. 7, and Saturday, Feb. 8, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 9, at the Josephine Louis Theater, 20 Arts Circle Drive, Evanston. Buy tickets here.

A closer look

Meet student associates from The Block Museum of Art in the galleries for a guided close look at works on display in the exhibition “It takes a long time to stay here: Paintings by Jordan Ann Craig.”
