This weather might be more fitting for Christmas than Valentine’s Day, but we’ve got plenty of events to get you into your boots and into the holiday spirit. Here’s what to put on your calendar this week.

Do a good turn

Celebrate Random Acts of Kindness Week by creating cards for hospitalized kids. Supplies will also be on hand for participants to make gratitude cards.

The event is at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 13, in the Cycle Center, room 138, Annenberg Hall, 2120 Campus Drive, Evanston.

Out of the chrysalis

Attend the opening reception of “Metamorphosis: The Art of Transformation,” the Dittmar Memorial Gallery 2025 community show. The exhibition features works by Northwestern students and local community members that examine the process of transformation.

The reception is at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 13, in Dittmar Gallery, Norris University Center, 1999 Campus Drive, Evanston.

Written in the stars

Grab a drink and get ready for Valentine’s Day by learning about magnetic attraction, from solar storms to the dance of binary stars, at the first Astronomy on Tap of 2025, presented by the Center for Interdisciplinary Exploration and Research in Astrophysics.

The event starts at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 13, at the Uptown Taproom, 1265 W. Wilson St., Chicago.

Be mine

Haven’t found the card that properly expresses your appreciation of someone special? Handcraft your own screenprinted or collaged Valentine’s Day card during an afternoon of holiday festivities at ARTica.

The crafting begins at noon on Friday, Feb. 14, at ARTica Studios, Norris University Center, 1999 Campus Drive, Evanston. RSVP here.

Love and loss

The Symphonic Wind Ensemble presents a Valentine’s Day concert exploring themes of joy, love and loss with music by Xi Wang, Leonard Bernstein and John Mackey.

The concert is at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 14, in Pick-Staiger Concert Hall, 50 Arts Circle Drive, Evanston. Buy tickets here.

Seeing doubles

See a tennis double feature — twice over — this weekend as men’s tennis takes on Illinois State and IU Indy on Saturday and women’s tennis plays UIC and Milwaukee on Sunday.

Men’s tennis plays at 12 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 15, and women’s tennis plays at 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 16. All games are at Combe Tennis Center, 2311 N. Campus Drive, Evanston.

The power of art

Take a trip to downtown Evanston this weekend for “Art Making in a Time of Crisis.” See excerpts from the Wirtz Center’s upcoming production of “February House” and listen to a panel of scholars and artists who will discuss joy as resistance, the need for self-expression and more.

The event is at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 16, at Evanston Public Library, 1703 Orrington Ave., Evanston. Sign up here.
