Northwestern University is inviting students, faculty and staff to submit nominations for deserving individuals worthy of an honorary degree.

The deadline is March 1, and this year’s submissions will be considered for recognition during the Commencement ceremony in 2026 and beyond.

“The success of the nomination process depends on our community members’ committed and ongoing participation,” said Provost Kathleen Hagerty in a message to campus during fall quarter. “We appreciate your engagement in one of Northwestern’s oldest academic traditions.”

The Committee on Honorary Degrees seeks nominees who have distinguished themselves in the fields of teaching, learning, research, writing and performance in the arts; or who have achieved distinction through their special contributions to society or, more specifically, to Northwestern.

Past recipients include exemplary scholars, artists, actors, writers, musicians, politicians and social leaders.

More information about the selection process — including nomination criteria and required materials — is detailed on the Office of the Provost website.

Nominations should include the completed online nomination form and, if available, a curriculum vitae or brief biography statement.

Recommendations of the selection committee are reviewed and voted on by the Faculty Senate in late spring. The Senate then transmits its recommendations to the Board of Trustees for final approval.

This year’s deadline to submit nominations for consideration is March 1. Send questions to honorarydegree@northwestern.edu.
