Next time you buy masks or hand sanitizer amid the COVID-19 pandemic, consider picking some up for a local homeless shelter, says Tricia Pendergrast, a second-year medical student at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. Pendergrast helped launch #GetMePPEChicago, an organization of Chicago-area medical students who distribute donations of personal protective equipment (PPE) to hospitals and community organizations in need. This winter, the organization is donating 50,000 isolation masks to shelters across Chicago.
