Overnight travel restrictions in downtown Chicago continue

Members of the Northwestern community traveling to downtown Chicago continue to face overnight travel restrictions in the wake of civil unrest in the area Sunday night. Although no incidents have been reported on our Chicago campus — and there have been no reports of incidents in downtown Chicago since early Monday morning — employees might encounter delays due to traffic measures and slowed or temporarily halted transit service.

The City of Chicago has been implementing several restrictions that limit travel to and from the downtown area between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m.

During those hours, Lake Shore Drive will be closed from Fullerton to I-55. Expressway ramps from I-90/I-94 will be closed in the downtown area and street closures will be in effect. If you drive, you may select to enter via the checkpoints at Chicago Avenue and Halsted Street, Kinzie and Halsted Streets, or at LaSalle Street. Northwestern employees might need to show a work ID at checkpoints to enter the area.

We encourage campus community members to check with the City of ChicagoChicago Transit Authority and Metra frequently for updates. Please note that the Chicago Train shuttles and the Intercampus shuttles may experience delays if sections of the downtown area remain closed during shuttle operation hours.
