Statement from President Schapiro on Las Vegas tragedy

Dear Members of the Northwestern community,

As I’m sure is the case for all of you, I was horrified by the news of the mass shooting that occurred last night in Las Vegas. On behalf of Northwestern University, I extend our deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to the victims of this tragedy and to their families.

At this time, it is unclear what motivated the shooting, which now appears to be the worst such incident in the country’s history. While there can be no rational explanation for such a senseless act, I hope that it will motivate us to consider ways that we can make a difference in society. At a time when divisiveness and inflammatory rhetoric continue to grow in our country, the need for meaningful change, peace and understanding has never been greater. We can achieve those goals only by working together, and I hope you will join me in doing so.

Morton Schapiro
President and Professor
