Winter recess days added to Northwestern calendar

Academic, administrative offices closed Dec. 27-29

Following is a memo from President Morton Schapiro to the Northwestern community.

The upcoming winter holiday season provides an opportunity for us to spend time with family and friends, and give thanks for all we hold dear.  Whether you plan to spend the holidays enjoying the many things that the Chicago area has to offer or if you plan to travel then, having time to reflect and refresh is vital to our overall well-being.

In recognition of the season and the dedication of our faculty and staff, I have asked that Northwestern’s academic and administrative offices close on December 27, 28, and 29, 2016.  These three “winter recess” days will be in addition to the already scheduled University holidays of December 23, 26 and 30, 2016 and January 2, 2017.  I realize that certain areas of the University will be unable to close completely during this time because some operations and services must continue to be provided.  In these circumstances, staff members who are not able to be off on December 27, 28 and/or 29 will be allowed to take the equivalent number of approved days off prior to August 31, 2017. The Office of Human Resources will provide more detail about these winter recess days off closer to the holiday season.

This will be the first time in many years, if ever, that Northwestern has provided this extended period of holiday time off. We will assess the experience and determine whether it is feasible to continue it in future years.  I hope by announcing this now, it will allow you to make early plans for the holidays, and that you take this time to recharge and welcome 2017 with renewed purpose and energy.

Thank you for all you do for Northwestern!
