EVANSTON, Ill. --- Members of the Northwestern University community are urged to use extra caution and leave extra time when driving or walking on Sheridan Road due to construction that is scheduled to begin next week and last for several months. The work, which will extend the length of campus along Sheridan Road, is expected to disrupt both vehicle and pedestrian traffic.
A contractor for the City of Evanston will be making water main improvements from Emerson Street, just north of the Weber Arch, to Lincoln Street, where Patten Gymnasium is located. The work will require Sheridan Road to be reduced to one lane in each direction for an extended period, which is expected to cause traffic delays.
In addition, the construction area will be fenced off to keep pedestrian traffic out of the work areas. Pedestrians should cross Sheridan Road only at the crosswalks where there are traffic signals. Both drivers and pedestrians should exercise caution in the entire area, as visibility will be limited because of the work and because construction vehicles will be operating in the area.
The project is expected to be completed by late May.
During the construction, all shuttle bus stops will be accessible and in operation, with the exception of Wednesday, January 27, 2016. However, riders are encouraged to plan ahead and prepare for delays throughout the construction period.
On Wednesday, January 27, 2016, all northbound traffic will be rerouted off Sheridan Road between Colfax Street and Lincoln Street. Shuttle buses will pick up Patten Gym riders across Lincoln Street at the northeast corner of Sheridan Road and Lincoln Street. This reroute is expected to occur only on Wednesday, January 27, 2016.
Please allow for extra travel time as shuttles may experience delays due to traffic congestion or unexpected reroutes. All shuttles can be tracked using the DoubleMap tracker.
