Northestern to Host Expert Panel On Gaza War

Discussion features leading scholars on Israel, the Palestinians and Arab World

Panelists Shai Feldman, Khalil Shikaki and Abdel Monem Said Aly coauthored the book \"Arabs and Israelis: Conflict and Peacemaking in the Middle East.\" Written by an Israeli, a Palestinian and an Egyptian, the book describes the history and politics of the Arab-Israeli conflict and its pivotal role in the Middle East.

EVANSTON, Ill. --- Northwestern University’s Crown Family Center for Jewish and Israel Studies will host a public discussion on the ramifications of the Gaza war on Israel and Palestinians on Thursday, Oct. 23 from 5 to 6:30 p.m.

The free event will be held in the McCormick Foundation Center, 1870 Campus Drive in Evanston.

The program, titled “Gaza and Beyond: Israel, the Palestinians and the Arab World,” features a diverse group of experts from Brandeis University, Northwestern University and the Chicago Council for Global Affairs.

In addition to discussing the effects of the war, the scholars will look at reconciliation efforts between Palestinian political factions Hamas and Fatah and the future of the Israeli-Palestinian peace process. Panelists will debate the destabilization of the Arab territorial nation-state, the rise of militant Islam and the struggle of influential powers in the Middle East.

Moderator Elie Rekhess is one of Israel’s leading experts on the Arab minority in Israel, Jewish-Arab relations, Palestinian politics and Islamic resurgence in Israel, the West Bank and Gaza. Rekhess is the Crown Visiting Professor in Israeli Studies at Northwestern.

The event is also co-sponsored by the Program in Middle East and North African Studies (MENA) at Northwestern’s Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences.

Shai Feldman, director of the Crown Center for Middle East studies and a professor of politics at Brandeis University.

Khalil Shikaki, director of the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research in Ramallah and a senior fellow at the Crown Center for Middle East Studies at Brandeis University.

Abdel Monem Said Aly, director of the Regional Center for Strategic Studies in Cairo, chairman of the Egyptian daily newspaper Al-Masry Al-Youm and a senior fellow at the Crown Center for Middle East Studies at Brandeis University.

Nabeel Khoury, Visiting scholar in the Middle East and North African (MENA) Program, Northwestern University and senior fellow at the Chicago Council on Global Affairs.
