EVANSTON, Ill. --- The next phase of construction of the Southeast Campus development at Northwestern University’s Evanston campus will begin with the opening of a new parking garage.
The Visitors Center will open this fall as the new welcoming place for prospective students and their families visiting Northwestern.
The opening of the new garage offsets the parking spaces that will be lost due to the demolition of the eastern third of the existing parking structure. That area will be redeveloped as a 120-foot-wide pedestrian-friendly green space with magnificent lakefront views.
This summer the traffic ramps to the existing parking structure will be replaced. Only one ramp at a time will be closed for reconstruction.
In addition, Northwestern's new Sailing Center has opened on the beach east of the Visitors Center. New stairs have been installed on the south side of the existing parking structure to access the Sailing Center.
The former lakefront pedestrian path will be reconstructed with landscape and lighting enhancements to connect Evanston’s lakefront path to the University's improved north/south walkway east of the new Music and Communication Building.
