University Book Sale Boasts Eclectic Finds

EVANSTON, Ill. --- Nearly 10,000 books, CDs, DVDs and periodicals from Northwestern University Library will be available for purchase by the general public Thursday and Friday, May 15 and 16, when the library’s yearly book sale opens up to one and all. 

Northwestern students, faculty, staff and alumni with a valid WildCARD or alumni ID are invited to preview the much-anticipated sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 14. 

The public event -- an annual favorite of book enthusiasts and collectors -- takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 15-16 in the Ver Steeg Lounge of Northwestern’s Main Library, 1970 Campus Drive on the Evanston campus.

A large number of vinyl records in excellent condition and impressive collections in art, African studies, Native American studies and history as well as Northwestern University Press overstock items will be available for purchase.

Friday, May 16, is “Buck-a-Bag” Day, when bargain seekers can fill up a bag with books, videos, DVDs and the like for a mere $1 or fill up a box for just $2. Until May 16, hardcover books will be priced at $3 each, quality paperbacks at $2 each and mass-market paperbacks at 50 cents. 

Some notable titles for sale include: “Tutankhamen: Life and Death of a Pharaoh,” “Frank Lloyd Wright: The Great Architecture of the Oak Park Years” and “The Codex Nuttall: A Picture Manuscript from Ancient Mexico.“

If you are looking for the collected works of Salvador Dalí, Roy Lichtenstein and Diego Rivera; the letters of William Blake, Henry James and Henry David Thoreau; the biographies of Queen Victoria, Emily Dickinson and Abraham Lincoln; and other eclectic and not-so-eclectic items, check out the annual sale.
