How Designers Thrive in Companies Large and Small

Designers as intra/entrepreneurs is focus of design seminar April 3

EVANSTON, Ill. --- Design professionals from established companies as well as young startups will present their stories and insights at the eighth annual “Design:Chicago” seminar Thursday, April 3, at Northwestern University.

The seminar, this year titled “Designers as Intra/Entrepreneurs,” will be held from 4 to 6:30 p.m. in the McCormick Tribune Auditorium, James L. Allen Center, 2169 Campus Drive, on the Evanston campus.

The speakers from Motorola, 3M, MINIMAL, Narrative Science and 30Second Mobile will discuss how designers function and creatively thrive as both entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs (entrepreneurs within large organizations).

  • Elisa All, founder and CEO of 30Second Mobile
  • Iqbal Arshad, senior vice president of engineering, global product development, Motorola Mobility
  • Kevin Gilboe, head of global design for the consumer business group, 3M
  • Kris Hammond, co-founder and chief scientist, Narrative Science
  • Scott Wilson, founder and chief creative officer, MINIMAL Inc.

Walter Herbst, director of Northwestern’s Master of Product Design and Development Management program, will moderate.

Design:Chicago is sponsored by the McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science, the Kellogg School of Management, the Segal Design Institute, the Master of Product Design and Development Management program and the two-degree MMM program, a joint venture  between McCormick and Kellogg.

The interdisciplinary Segal Design Institute fosters curricular development and research in design across all schools at Northwestern and is dedicated to the study of human-centered design, in context.

The Master of Product Design and Development Management program is a two-year, part-time program on alternating Fridays and Saturdays targeted at working professionals, with a new full-time Friday-Saturday offering that allows for completion in nine months.

The MMM program is a two-year, dual-degree program that offers students both an MBA and a Master of Science in design innovation.
