Salute to Evanston's 150 Years

EVANSTON, Ill. --- The history of Northwestern University and the city of Evanston are forever intertwined. In fact, the city’s namesake, John Evans, was part of the group that founded the University in 1851. With the city celebrating the 150th anniversary of its 1863 incorporation, the University will showcase that rich and diverse shared history through a six-week class in summer.

Sponsored by the Alumnae of Northwestern University, “History of Evanston” will feature presentations on topics such as the general history of the area, Evanston architecture, African American history in Evanston and more. Lecturers include Henry Binford, associate professor of history; Albert Hunter, professor of sociology; and Kevin Leonard, University archivist.

Classes begin June 27 and run through August 1. Registration is $100 and is open to everyone. For more information, visit the Alumnae of Northwestern University.

The University is proud to partner with the Evanston150 steering committee as it plans to celebrate the city’s sesquicentennial. The committee’s goal is for every individual and organization in Evanston to find a way to connect to the anniversary in 2013.
