Northwestern Music in June

EVANSTON, ILL. --- A guest performance by renowned Italian guitarist Oscar Ghiglia that will launch the Bienen School’s Summer 2013 Guitar Workshop and an admission-free concert by Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO) trombonist and Bienen School faculty member Michael Mulcahy are among the Northwestern University events coming up in June.

Presented by the University’s Henry and Leigh Bienen School of Music, other June highlights include an electronics inspired program by Northwestern’s Symphonic Band that will feature a contemporary piece by English singer, composer and songwriter Imogen Heap and a work by CSO composer-in-residence Mason Bates. An Opera Scenes Gala includes excerpts from works by Puccini, Mozart and Verdi.

In addition to the summer guitar workshop, from mid-June through early August the Bienen School is also offering voice, violin, trombone and oboe workshops, symposiums on conducting, wind music and percussion and a vocal career seminar that can be audited by members of the general public. Ticket prices are indicated in two ranges: the first for the general public and the second for full-time students with IDs. Northwestern faculty and staff with a valid WildCARD ID receive a 15 percent discount off the general public ticket price.

JUNE 2013 CONCERTS

All June programs listed below are open to the public. They take place on the University’s Evanston campus at Pick-Staiger Concert Hall, 50 Arts Circle Drive; Lutkin Hall, 700 University Place; or Regenstein Recital Hall, 60 Arts Circle Drive, as noted.

Philharmonia, 7:30 p.m. Sunday, June 2, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Robert G. Hasty will direct the Northwestern Philharmonia in a program that includes Tomas Svoboda’s “Overture of the Season,” Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat Minor featuring piano soloist Xuan He and Schubert’s Symphony No. 8 in B Minor (“Unfinished”). Tickets are $6 for the general public and $4 for students with IDs.

Northwestern University Chamber Orchestra, “American Folk Music,” 7:30 p.m. Thursday, June 6, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Robert G. Hasty directs the Northwestern University Chamber Orchestra in a folk music inspired performance. The concert will include Peter Schickele’s Concerto for Chamber Orchestra, Ives’ Symphony No. 3 and Price’s Symphony No. 1. Tickets are $6 for the general public and $4 for students with IDs.

Symphonic Band, 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 7, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Timothy J. Robblee will direct the Symphonic Band in an electronics inspired program featuring Mason Bates’ “Mothership,” Imogen Heap’s “Hide and Seek,” James Mobberley’s “Ascension” and Steven Bryant’s “Ecstatic Waters.” Tickets are $6 for the general public and $4 for students. 

Northwestern University Symphony Orchestra and University Chorale, “American Explorer,” 7:30 p.m. Saturday, June 8, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Victor Yampolsky conducts the Northwestern University Symphony Orchestra and the University Chorale in a program that includes Hanson’s “Song of Democracy,” Vaughan Williams’ “Serenade to Music” and

Jennifer Higdon’s “Singing Rooms” featuring violin soloist Charlotte Malin. Tickets are $8 for the general public and $5 for students with IDs.

Oscar Ghiglia, Anne Waller and Mark Maxwell, guitar, 7:30 p.m. Saturday, June 15, Lutkin Hall. In the opening concert of the Bienen School’s Summer Guitar Workshop, guest artist Oscar Ghiglia, Bienen School faculty member Anne Waller and DePaul University guitar studies coordinator Mark Maxwell perform works by Sor, Sergio Assad, Takemitsu and Bizet. Tickets are $16 for the general public and $8 for students with IDs.

Guitar Workshop Concert, 7:30 p.m, Thursday, June 20, Regenstein Recital Hall. This capstone concert features high school and college students performing classical guitar masterworks. Admission is free.

Opera Scenes Gala, 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 21, Lutkin Hall. Directed by W. Stephen Smith with staging and acting by Gene B. Roberts, this concert is the culmination of the Naked Voice Institute, a weeklong workshop focused on developing a well-rounded approach to vocal performance and pedagogy. The program features excerpts from the operas “La Boheme,” “Die Zauberflote,” “La Traviata,” “Lakme” and “Don Giovanni.” Admission is free.

Violin Institute Recitals, 7:30 p.m. Saturday, June 29, and 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 3, Regenstein Recital Hall. Both recitals will feature performances by Violin Institute participants. Admission is free.

Trombonist Michael Mulcahy, 3 p.m. Sunday, June 30, Regenstein Recital Hall. Chicago Symphony Orchestra trombonist and principal trombone of the Grand Teton Music Festival, Bienen School faculty member Mulcahy has served as principal trombone of the Cologne Radio, Melbourne and Tasmanian symphonies. He also is a member of the Chicago Chamber Musicians and Summit Brass and is active as a soloist, teacher, lecturer and clinician throughout the world. Mulcahy will be accompanied by pianist Yoko Yamada-Selvaggio. Admission is free. 

CONSTRUCTION ALERT

Due to construction on the south end of campus, Arts Circle Drive is currently closed to traffic. Free parking is still available on weekends and after 4 p.m. weekdays in the two-level lakefront structure located on Campus Drive. After turning onto Campus Drive from Sheridan Road, enter the parking structure on the right by way of ramps leading to the upper and lower levels. For vehicles with handicap placards, reserved spaces are available on weekends and after 4 p.m. weekdays in the lot directly west of Louis Hall.
