Bargains Galore at Upcoming University Book Sale

More than 6,000 items available for purchase, many at great savings

EVANSTON, Ill. --- More than 6,000 books, CDs, DVDs and periodicals will be available for purchase by the general public Thursday and Friday, May 16 and 17. That’s when Northwestern University Library’s yearly book sale opens up to one and all.

Northwestern students, faculty, staff, and alumni with a valid WildCARD or alumni ID are invited to preview the much-anticipated sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 15.

The public event -- an annual favorite of book enthusiasts and collectors -- takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Ver Steeg Lounge of Northwestern’s Main Library, 1970 Campus Drive on the Evanston campus.

This year’s sale is more eclectic than ever, according to librarian and book sale coordinator Toby Worscheck. A large number of sheet music titles, vinyl records in excellent condition, impressive collections in art, African studies, Native American studies and history as well as overstock Northwestern University Press titles in mint condition will be available for purchase.

Friday, May 17, is “Buck-a-Bag” Day, when bargain seekers can fill up a bag with books, videos, DVDs and the like for a mere $1 or fill up a box for just $2. Until May 17, hardcover books will be priced at $3 each; quality paperbacks at $2 each; and mass-market paperbacks at 50 cents.

The bargains abound at the annual sale, says Worscheck. Whether it’s a copy of “Geronimo: The Man, His Time, His Place,” “The Complete Plays of Bernard Shaw” or “The Supremes: A Saga of Motown Dreams,” there’s a fabulous and unexpected bargain you won’t want to pass up.
