A Degree, a Dictator and a Deck of Cards

EVANSTON, Ill. – In 2003, Alphonso Van Marsh broke the story of Saddam Hussein’s capture with his own exclusive video while reporting solo in Iraq. On Thursday, May 9, Marsh will talk about his career as an international correspondent when he delivers a lecture at Northwestern University.

A 1994 graduate of the Medill School of Journalism, Media, Integrated Marketing Communications, Marsh will talk on “A Degree, a Dictator and a Deck of Cards: How Medill Prepared Me for the War Zone” at 4 p.m. in the McCormick Tribune Center Forum, 1870 Campus Drive, Evanston. His presentation is free and open to the public. A reception will follow.

The recipient of a National Headliner Award, Van Marsh has spent much of his career reporting out of the Middle East and Africa. He began his career as an intern at CNN, where he later worked for 12 years as a correspondent in the Cairo, Nairobi, Johannesburg, Istanbul, Atlanta and London bureaus. He currently is an international multimedia journalist.
