'Media Rewired' to Address Tech Trends

New York Times media reporter, former Facebook editor to speak

EVANSTON, Ill. --- New York Times media reporter Brian Stelter and former Facebook managing editor Dan Fletcher will speak on the future of media at “Media Rewired,” a conference at Northwestern University Saturday, April 13, and Sunday, April 14, exploring the latest technology trends in journalism and integrated marketing communications.

Free and open to the public, “Media Rewired” will feature workshops and lectures with titles including “How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Learn to Code,” “Visual Journalism: There’s an App for That,” “Our Days are Numbered: Intro to Information Design” and “Machine-Generated Content: Impact on Journalism and Beyond.”

Among the presenters are Sarah Eva Monroe, a member of the 2012 Obama campaign’s digital advertising team, on “Buzzfeed & Obama: 8 Native Advertising Need-to-Knows,” and Adobe Systems engineer Tom Petrillo and Medill Professor Susan Mango Curtis on “Digital Publishing: Publications for Mobile and Tablets.”

On Sunday, April 14, Adobe evangelists will lead the second day of the conference with discussions of their newest software.

New York Times reporter Stelter will kick off the event at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 13. Fletcher -- former Facebook managing editor and a 2009 graduate of Northwestern’s Medill School of Journalism, Media, Integrated Marketing Communications -- will close the first day of the conference with a keynote address at 4 p.m.

New York Times TV and media reporter Stelter is a lead contributor to the Times’ Media Decoder blog and founder of TVsNewser, a popular blog about the television and news industry now owned by mediabistro.

Fletcher launched Time’s NewsFeed site while serving as the magazine’s first social media editor. He developed the editorial social media team for Bloomberg News and Bloomberg Businessweek before joining Facebook in 2012 to lead the team creating Facebook Stories.

”Our goal is to inspire students to become innovators in the media industry,” said Fabiano Leal, Medill undergraduate and co-chair of “Media Rewired,” which is sponsored by Medill, Adobe, The New York Times, Northwestern University Center for Leadership and the University’s Center for Student Involvement. 

“Media Rewired” partners include F&F Marketing and the Northwestern chapters of the National Association of Black Journalists, the Society of Professional Journalists and the Online News Association.

The event will take place at the McCormick Tribune Center, 1870 Campus Drive, on Northwestern’s Evanston campus. Presented by the Medill Undergraduate Student Advisory Council, (MUSAC), it is free and open to the public. For a full schedule of conference activities and other information, visit "Media Rewired."
