Northwestern Taps New Trier High School Principal

EVANSTON, Ill. --- Timothy Dohrer, principal of New Trier Township High School in Winnetka, has been named director of the teacher education program at Northwestern University’s School of Education and Social Policy. His appointment becomes effective on July 1, 2013.

Dohrer has served as an instructor in the Master of Science in Education program in the School of Education and Social Policy since 2004. As principal of New Trier -- one of the nation’s largest and most successful high schools -- he is responsible for the overall operations of its Winnetka campus. Dohrer has extensive experience in the areas of research and academic services and in curriculum and instruction. 

In a career spanning two decades, Dohrer has taught middle school, high school and college students in rural, suburban and urban settings. As principal of New Trier’s Winnetka campus, he supervises a staff of 450 employees and a student population of approximately 3,000 high school sophomores, juniors and seniors.

Dohrer will succeed Sophie Haroutunian-Gordon, who will retire as director of the teacher education program after more than 20 years. She is the author of “Turning the Soul: Teaching through Conversation in the High School” and “Learning to Teach through Discussion: The Art of Turning the Soul.”
